Influence and Consultants at World Workplace Asia

Influence and Consultants at World Workplace Asia

President of the IFMA FMCC, Val Moraes, was one of 500 delegates who attended World Workplace Asia, held at the Hotel Marina Bay Sands in Singapore this week.

Val presented the keynote address on the second day, entitled ‘Facilities Manager as Influencer in the C Suite – a Strategic Perspective’.

His key message was that all Facilities Managers have the potential to become either part of the C Suite or close enough to the C Suite to influence decision makers. “All it needs of the individual is ability, ambition, integrity and determination to get there, come what may.”

Val also chaired and facilitated a Panel Discussion on ‘FM Consultant – Ally or Threat to FM Practitioners?’ (Trans Continental views).

On the panel with Val, who lives in New Zealand, were FM consultants Ted Ritter from the USA, Dr Joachim Hohmann from Germany, Jeff Budimulia representing Singapore/China, Ryan Darnell from Dubai and Stephen Ballesty from Australia.

A free and frank discussion with Trans Continental views from the various panellists weighed the pros and cons of engaging with consultants and how neither a practitioner nor a consultant can be an expert in all areas of FM. Hence, the general consensus was that practitioners collaborating with consultants, or collaboration between consultants, was the ideal solution – efficient, effective and a win-win for all parties.

An additional presentation was provided by Ted Ritter and Dr Joachim Hohmann under the banner of the Information Technology Council of IFMA of which by gentlemen are board members. This presentation is based on selected chapters from The Facility Manager’s Guide to Information Technology: An International Collaboration between the IFMA Information Technology Council and GEFMA.

The presenters are part of the co-authorship team that contributed to the informational text, which presents a current, impartial and comprehensive look at how information technology (IT) and facility management (FM) have become inextricably bound in the modern workplace.

Exploring the evolving relationship between IT and FM, this book is a text that can be used by students and novice facility managers, as well experienced FMs. The authors intended the book to be used as both a teaching guide and reference tool for educational organizations and corporations alike.

The presentation included three recent case studies from North America and Europe in different application areas that showcase the latest advancements in facility management automation and best practices.

ITC and GEFMA will publish a second edition of the “The Facility Manager’s Guide to Information Technology” in 2016, which will also include case studies from Asia/Pacific. This edition of the book will then be provided by IFMA China in a Chinese language Version.
